Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport (GIG) is not connected directly to Copacabana or Ipanema by metro. The most practical option depends on your arrival time, luggage, group size, and tolerance for transfers.

Pre-arranged transfer
A booked transfer is the lowest-friction option when you do not want to solve pickup logistics after a long flight. Share the flight number, arrival time, destination, group size, and luggage in advance. The driver can monitor delays and agree on a meeting point.
It is particularly useful for families, groups that need a larger vehicle, arrivals after dark, and accommodation without a staffed reception. Confirm whether waiting time, tolls, parking, and child seats are included.
Uber and other ride apps
RIOgaleao has a designated ride-app pickup area. Follow the airport signage and the location shown in the app, because pickup arrangements can change. Confirm the license plate, driver, and vehicle before entering.
You need working mobile data and enough battery. Prices vary with demand, and a standard car may not hold several passengers plus large suitcases. Never accept an unsolicited ride from someone approaching you inside the terminal.
Official airport taxis
Official taxi services operate at the airport, including a regular metered taxi point at Terminal 2 arrivals. Use the marked airport counter or official queue. Before departure, establish whether the ride uses the meter or a prepaid or fixed arrangement and whether tolls are separate.
A taxi can be simpler than a ride app when your phone has no data or the app cannot verify a foreign payment card.
Public transport
The airport lists a special service between GIG and Terminal Gentileza, as well as BRT and regular bus routes. Terminal Gentileza connects with the VLT light rail and other city transport. This can be economical, but it is not a direct one-seat ride to most hotels in Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, or Botafogo.
For a first arrival with luggage, calculate the whole chain: airport wait, bus, transfer at Gentileza, and the final walk or car. Fares and schedules can change, especially on weekends and holidays, so check the operator on the day.
If your flight lands late
Use a direct transfer, official taxi, or verified ride app. Avoid experimenting with several public-transport connections after a long overnight flight. Send your accommodation the estimated arrival time and confirm how you will receive keys if there is no 24-hour reception.

GIG is Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport on Ilha do Governador. SDU is Santos Dumont Airport beside Centro and is much closer to the traditional South Zone. Check the airport code on every ticket and transfer booking, especially when connecting between airports.
