A visitor gets into a yellow car in Rio and assumes it is an official taxi. In reality, unlicensed private drivers sometimes use cars painted to resemble licensed cabs. Locals call them piratas. Another common risk appears when the car is stopped rather than moving: an open window and a visible phone can make a quick grab possible at a traffic light. Here is how to identify a legal taxi, pay cash through Uber, and reduce avoidable risks inside the car.
How to identify an official yellow taxi
Rio regulates the appearance of its taxis. The car must use the designated yellow body color—amarelo Java in the Munsell system—with a blue stripe. A legal taxi also has:
- a taximeter positioned where the passenger can see it;
- a driver identification card with a photograph displayed on the dashboard, usually above the glove compartment;
- a vehicle-inspection sticker on the windshield.
Paint alone is not proof of a licence. Rio periodically finds private vehicles made to resemble taxis, while at night an Uber or 99 car with a colored windshield indicator can also be mistaken for one at a glance.
If you want to call a taxi rather than hail one, use Taxi.Rio, Rio de Janeiro’s municipal taxi app, or ask your hotel reception to arrange a car. Before entering a taxi on the street, take a moment to compare the dashboard identification with the person driving and check that the meter starts when the ride begins.
Uber and cash payments
Uber accepts cash in many Brazilian cities, including Rio, so a payment card is not mandatory. Select Dinheiro—cash—as the payment method before requesting the ride. You cannot change from cash to card halfway through the trip.
At the end, the driver’s screen displays the exact amount due. There is no official cash surcharge. The practical problem is change: a driver may not have enough for a large banknote, which can leave the passenger paying a few reais more than the app shows. Carry smaller notes or ask about change before the ride starts.
If the full fare is not paid, Uber can record the difference as an outstanding balance, or valor pendente. The app may prevent another booking until that amount is settled by card, Pix, or another available in-app method. A visitor without access to a compatible card or Pix can therefore lose access to new rides until the balance is cleared.
There are two useful backups. First, add a working international payment card to the account before you need it. Second, Uber prepaid cards are sold at supermarkets and retail chains across Brazil in values from R$20 to R$500. After purchase, enter the code in the app under Wallet, Add Balance, and Uber Prepaid. The credit can be useful when an overseas card is rejected because of regional or issuer restrictions.
Uber’s safety tools work in the same way for cash and card rides: you can follow the route in real time, share the trip with another person, and compare the driver profile and licence plate with the booking. Taxi.Rio likewise shows the assigned car and route before pickup.
Why an open window creates a risk
At a traffic light or in slow traffic, a car remains still long enough for someone outside to reach an open window. Phones and bags can be grabbed through the gap in seconds, from either a passenger or the driver.
Keep windows closed or open only a few centimeters, lock the doors, and keep your phone, bag, and other valuables away from the window. Do not leave them on the seat. If you are waiting outside for a car, stand back from the curb and avoid holding your phone where it can be taken before the vehicle arrives.
A bright phone screen is visible at night
After dark, a phone screen is much easier to see from outside the car than it feels from the passenger seat. In a stopped vehicle, especially beside an open window, the light signals that an easily grabbed item is within reach.
If you need to check the route or send a message while the car is stopped, hold the phone below window level and away from the glass.
If a robbery happens
A robbery in or beside a car can involve a weapon. Do not resist, chase the person, or try to recover the item yourself. Once the immediate situation is over, ask the driver to move to a busy, well-lit place and call the police on 190. If language is a problem, ask a local person to speak on the phone and use a translation app for the essential details.
Before your next ride
For a taxi hailed on the street, check the official color scheme, the driver photo on the dashboard, and the running taximeter. When possible, request a taxi through Taxi.Rio or your hotel. In Uber, choose cash before booking, carry smaller notes, and keep a backup payment method in the app. Inside any car, keep windows mostly closed and valuables out of sight. If a robbery occurs, protect yourself rather than the property and contact police from a safe location.
