Brazil does not use one voltage nationwide, and the same home or hotel room may have outlets with two different voltages. Here is how to choose an adapter, identify devices that are safe to plug in, and avoid damaging an appliance in seconds.
Why one building can have both 110V and 220V
It seems logical that a country should use either 110V or 220V, as most destinations do. Brazil is different, and the explanation is more complicated than one neighborhood using one voltage and the next using another.
In many parts of Brazil, ordinary outlets receive a live wire and a neutral wire. The voltage between them is 110–127V, which supplies lighting and most small appliances.
A 220V outlet in the same apartment is not necessarily connected to a separate power network. It can use two different live phases from the same electrical panel, without the neutral. These outlets are commonly installed for higher-power equipment such as air conditioners, electric ovens, washing machines, and water heaters. A hotel in a city where ordinary outlets are 110–127V may therefore have a separate 220V bathroom outlet for a hair dryer.
Parts of southern Brazil, including Porto Alegre and surrounding areas, historically use 220V as the standard supply rather than an additional option. Their electrical networks developed differently.
The practical conclusion is that a city or region cannot guarantee the voltage of every outlet. Check the specific outlet you plan to use.
Brazilian plug type and choosing an adapter
Since 2010, Brazil’s main socket standard has been Type N under standard NBR 14136. It resembles the European Type C plug but differs in pin position, pin thickness, and grounding. Older socket types can still appear in older homes and hotels.
A simple adapter intended for one European plug may therefore fail to fit a Brazilian outlet because of its shape or pin diameter. A universal travel adapter is the more reliable choice.
Adapters are also inexpensive and easy to buy in Brazil at airports, supermarkets, and electronics or household-appliance shops. You do not necessarily need to bring one from home.
An adapter does not change the voltage
A common mistake is assuming that a plug adapter also adjusts voltage for the device. It does not. An adapter only changes the physical plug shape. The voltage supplied by the outlet remains unchanged.
Converting voltage—for example, using a European 220V appliance on a 110V outlet—requires a separate transformer rated for the appliance’s power consumption. This is not a pocket-sized plug adapter; it is a separate device that is heavier and more expensive.
What can you plug in safely?
Most modern electronics with a separate power supply—including phones, laptops, cameras, and power-bank chargers—support both lower and higher voltages. Check the label on the charger or power brick for a line such as INPUT: 100–240V. If that range appears, the device can use any Brazilian outlet with the correct plug adapter and does not need a transformer.
Be more careful with high-power appliances that do not have a separate power supply, such as hair dryers, irons, curling irons, and electric kettles. These are often designed for one specific voltage.
An appliance purchased in Europe is likely to be rated for 220V. If a simple heating appliance rated at 220V is connected to a 110V outlet, it generally runs much more weakly rather than burning out. A 1,500-watt kettle or iron would produce roughly 375 watts at half the voltage because its resistance remains the same while power falls by a factor of four. Appliances containing electronics or motors may not start at all.
The opposite mismatch is more dangerous. Connecting a 110V appliance to a 220V outlet can damage it immediately.
Motorized appliances, including hair dryers and some ventilated styling tools, may hum without turning when supplied with the wrong voltage. Switch the appliance off immediately rather than waiting for it to start. Without rotation, the motor does not cool correctly and can overheat.
The only reliable check is the voltage printed on the appliance. If the label shows one number—110V or 220V—instead of a range, do not use it in an outlet whose voltage you have not confirmed.
What to do at your hotel
If you do not know an outlet’s voltage:
- Ask reception whether the room has a separate 220V outlet for a hair dryer or iron. Many hotels in 110–127V cities provide one.
- Check every charger for the words INPUT: 100–240V. That range means the power supply can handle either voltage.
- Do not connect a hair dryer, iron, curling iron, or kettle brought from home until you have checked its label and confirmed the outlet voltage.
The practical takeaway
A 220V outlet in a Brazilian home or hotel may simply use a different pair of wires from the same electrical panel. A plug adapter solves only the physical connection; it does not convert voltage. Electronics labeled 100–240V can normally be used with the right adapter, while single-voltage high-power appliances require a confirmed outlet or a correctly rated transformer.
